The other side of sociality - susceptibility to parasites in social insects ; [kumulative Habilitation]

Abstract

In den 9 Kapiteln dieser Habilitationsschrift werden grundlegende Mechanismen der Wirt-Parasit-Interaktionen eines eusozialen Wirts (Hummeln (Genus Bombus)) vom individuellen bis zum Populationslevel untersucht. Mit einem breiten Methodenspektrum – von der Verhaltensökologie bis zur Analyse der Genexpression – wird der Einfluss der Sozialität auf die Interaktionen mit Parasiten analysiert insbesondere im Hinblick auf Resistenzmechanismen. Auf allen untersuchten Ebenen finden sich Mechanismen der Resistenz, die mit einander interagieren und dadurch die Anpassung der Parasiten an ihre Wirte verhindern oder zumindest erschweren.

The 9 chapters of this Habilitation thesis present the analysis of host-parasite interactions of a eusocial host (bumblebees (genus Bombus)) from the individual to the population level. Using a broad methodological array – from behavioural ecology to gene expression profiling – the influence of sociality on interactions with parasites is analysed with a special focus on mechanisms of resistance. At all analysed levels there are mechanisms of resistance that are interacting with each other and as a result preventing or at least impede the adaptation of parasites towards their hosts.
