Richert, E.; Rüter, S.; Seidler, C.; Wilhelm, E. G.: Nature conservation and flood prevention – twoincompatible objectives? Derivation and evaluation of measures from an interdisciplinary perspective. -Hercynia N.F. 44 (2011): 39 – 52.This publication illustrates synergetic effects between the aims of nature conservation and flood preventionbased on own studies and a literature review. Aims of high priority and common guidelines forintegrated nature conservation and flood prevention for agricultural and forested areas as well as forfloodplains are specified. In the context of nature conservation, the development of (i) biotopes withhigh conservation value, (ii) biodiversity, (iii) ecological networks and (iv) scenic quality are aims ofhigh priority. Goals from the viewpoint of flood prevention are (i) increasing the storage capacity ofsoils, (ii) delaying runoff concentration, (iii) lessening the peak flood discharge and (iv) reducing flowvelocities in streams as well as the material transport. The suggested 20 measures such as transformationof arable fields into (extensive) grasslands or into near-natural forests, establishment of linear landscapestructures (greenways, field margins, hedgerows), ecological transformation of forests and restoration ofstream waters are predominantly associated with the development of near-natural habitats. Based on adecision support key potential flood generating areas and thus areas for measures can be identified andsuitable measures can be derived. It becomes clear that it is both necessary and possible to coordinatenature conservation and flood prevention measures, in order to use synergies optimally. This illustratesthe chance of integrated flood management, because new conclusive arguments for nature conservationcan be found.eng
