MALYSKA, G.: Influences of the mining industry on the drinking water supply in southern SaxanAnhalt - a historical review. - Hercynia N. F. 33 (2000): 5- 30. Important potash and rock salt deposits, Iignite deposits, copper ore and iron ore deposits as weil as mineable precious meta! deposits in the Southern part of Saxony Anhalt have been the basis for significant mining works and industries in that connection for centuries. Mining - on the one band - providet the conditions for the development of the mining industry in this territory and, on the other, resulted in a considerable lowering of the ground water table and contamination of the ground and flowing waters combined with the effects on the supply of potable water for the inhabitants of this territory. The original individual water supply systems of the inhabitants in the area of mining industry concentration were no Ionger capable to ensure the supply for the inhabitants con.cerned so that supply from central water supply systems gained more and more significance and finally feeding of external water via a system of long distance pipelines became necessary. This contribution gives a representation of the effects of this mining industry on sufficient and high-quality potable water for the inhabitants in the Southern part of Saxony Anhalt.
