Groups acting with fixity 4

Abstract

A group acts with fixity k if and only if the maximal number of fixed points of its non-trivial elements is exactly k. This thesis analyses groups acting faithfully, transitively, and with fixity 4 by describing the generalised Fitting subgroup of such a group G. It also gives a motivation for this analysis. It is proven that G can have at most one component, and a description of the structure of the component is given. Furthermore, the Fitting subgroup of G is studied. This thesis also includes a classification of all finite simple groups acting transitively and with fixity 4, as well as a classification of all quasi-simple groups acting transitively and with fixity at most 4.

Eine Gruppe wirkt mit Fixität k, wenn die maximale Anzahl der Fixpunkte ihrer nicht-trivialen Elemente genau k ist. Diese Arbeit analysiert Gruppen, die treu, transitiv und mit Fixität 4 wirken, indem die verallgemeinerte Fittinguntergruppe einer solchen Gruppe G beschrieben wird, und sie geht auf die Motivation für diese Analyse ein. Es wird unter anderem gezeigt, dass G höchstens eine Komponente hat, und es wird deren Struktur beschrieben. Außerdem wird die Fittinguntergruppe von G betrachtet. Die Arbeit beinhaltet auch die Klassifikation aller endlichen einfachen Gruppen, die transitiv und mit Fixität 4 wirken, ebenso wie eine Klassifikation aller quasi-einfachen Gruppen, die transitiv und mit Fixität höchstens 4 wirken.
