In this dissertation, potential-induced degradation (PID) at the rear side of bifacial silicon solar cells with passivated emitter and rear (PERC) is investigated. From the experiments it is demonstrated that two different PIDs occur on the rear side. First, a corrosive PID effect (PID-c) is observed which leads to irreversible power losses. The oxidation of the silicon wafer below the aluminum oxide layer, was observed for the first time in PID-c and is attributed to impurities in the manufacturing process. Second, PID due to de-polarization (PID-p) is observed. PID-p shows a characteristic transient and can be explained by a storage of positive charges in the silicon nitride layer and an associated compensation of the field-effect passivation. Models for the underlying mechanisms are discussed. |
