Abstract: To discuss the flow patterns of infiltrated precipitation the dye tracer Brilliant Blue FCF and the FDR-Method were used. Main questions included the water movement in the soil types and if there are differences between the two. Furthermore, the two used methods were compared with each other. The experiment took place in four monoliths of a Haplic Chernozem and in four monoliths of a Calcaric Cambisol from the Querfurter Platte. Two monoliths each were located in small greenhouses and got irrigated from mid-July till mid-September 2011. The other monoliths were located in an outside area without experiencing any irrigation during that time period. The results showed that the infiltration of water in the Haplic Chernozem occurred as matrix and preferential flow without one dominating. In the Calcaric Cambisol the preferential flow dominated permanently. The method analyses indicate that the quantitative data of the FDR-Method cannot be transformed into qualitative data. The trial to quantify the qualitative data from the dye tracer experiment resulted in semi-quantitative data only. Furthermore, the results indicate that Brilliant Blue FCF is not suitable for visualising the water movement in a Haplic Chernozem.
