Many ponds near Clausthal-Zellerfeld were created by mining activities in the West-Harz Mountains(Highlands in the south of Lower-Saxony). Currently, these mine-ponds are a cause for conflict betweenthe waterworks, tourism and nature conservation. At many waters rare and endangered vegetation types like small-sedge fens (Caricion fuscae) and dwarfrush-communities (Isoeto-Nanojuncetea) exist. Phytosociological and ecological investigations of bothtypes were carried out to examine the degree of endangerment and to draw conclusions for nature conservation. As both vegetation types show contrary preferences to fluctuation in water Ievels, a differentiatedconcept is necessary which considers the interests of nature conservation and those of tourism.ger
