The greenhouse gas methane is formed in the rumen of dairy cows during the fermentation of carbohydrates. Methane formation contributes to an energy loss of feed energy. Dairy cows are challenged with a negative energy balance during the periparturient period. It was hypothesized that the combined feeding of the methane inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) and high concentrate feed proportions (CFP) result in additive effects on reducing the methane emissions and the peripartal energy deficit. Feeding high CFP and 3-NOP reduced the methane emissions in an additive manner in vivo, but not in vitro. The effectiveness of 3-NOP was lower in rations with low CFP. The GreenFeed system measures the respiratory gas exchange and is suited for both, the quantification of methane emissions and the estimation of the energy balance. Feeding high CFP improved the energy supply of the dairy cow in the peripartal period, whereas the energy metabolism was not affected by the supplementation of 3-NOP.eng
